At Kantoko, your safety comes first.
Because stimulant medications can affect heart rate and blood pressure, all patients must complete an Electrocardiogram (ECG) before starting or continuing stimulant treatment.
The ECG helps our clinicians confirm that your heart health is suitable for safe prescribing.
1. Why an ECG Is Required
An ECG measures your heart’s electrical activity and detects any irregularities that could increase the risks associated with stimulant use. Kantoko requires a recent ECG to ensure prescribing aligns with medical best practice and the AADPA guidelines for stimulant prescribing.
2. When an ECG Is Needed
You’ll need to provide an ECG:
- Before your first appointment.
- Periodically during treatment, if clinically indicated
- If there are new symptoms, medication changes, or health concerns
You can complete an ECG through your GP, local pathology clinic, or another approved diagnostic provider. Results can be uploaded securely to your Kantoko account.
3. Review and Clinical Decisions
Every ECG is reviewed by a Kantoko clinician as part of your treatment assessment.
- Normal ECG: Stimulant prescribing may proceed.
- Abnormal or unclear ECG: Prescribing will be paused until further investigations are conducted via your regular GP or when a specialist cardiologist reviews your result and confirms it’s safe to continue.
Kantoko clinicians follow strict clinical governance standards to ensure no treatment is provided where cardiac safety is uncertain.
4. If Your ECG Is Abnormal
If your ECG shows an abnormal finding:
- Your clinician will pause prescribing and advise you to see your GP or a cardiologist for further review and investigations
- You may need additional tests, such as a repeat ECG, holter monitor test or echocardiogram.
- Once you have written clearance confirming it’s safe to proceed, upload it to your Kantoko documents or email it to support@kantoko.com.au
Treatment can only resume once cardiac safety has been confirmed.
5. Ongoing Monitoring
Periodic ECGs may be requested to monitor your heart health during ongoing stimulant treatment.
If an updated ECG is required and not provided, stimulant prescribing may be temporarily paused until it is received.
